The Word

A 16m sculptural beacon for the Methodist Publishing House headquarters in Peterborough. The symbolism makes a pertinent and powerful statement of the mission and ministry of the House. ‘The Word’ reveals at ground level, a plough blade breaking up the ground, in preparation for the seeds to be sown. The same plough shape being also reminiscent of an open book. The building and sculpture were dedicated and officially opened May 2002

In 2011 the Peterborough sculpture trust acquired the sculpture and it was re-sited at the entrance of the new City Hospital.  Angela Broekhuizen, associate director of projects at Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The sculpture has a symbolic representation of three blades with a plough at its base and represents care given by people to nurture, to enable potential to be realised, and to feed not just the body but the mind and spirit of others.
