AIM

Broadbent was chosen to produce a series of unique seating elements, for a project entitled “The Renaissance of Whitehaven”. The Whitehaven Development Company secured an 11.3 million grant which was the largest Millennium Lottery grant in Cumbria.

CONCEPT

Each beautifully designed and crafted seat incorporates a typography design, reflecting different events that have occurred in Whitehaven over the centuries and thereby personalising the design to the location.

The lead designer was Melanie Jackson of Broadbent.

Millennium Fin Benches

Sixteen of these unique sculptural, patinated bronze and timber seats can be seen along Millennium Promenade and the Hub, which forms part of the award winning ‘Renaissance of Whitehaven’ development.

TRADING BENCHES

Nine bronze low-relief plaques illustrating the historic trades of the port of Whitehaven are set within a timber bench. These are supported by a cast aluminium base that houses a port-hole light fitting.

Compass Seat

The compass seat combines bronze and purpleheart timber as a feature within the crow’s nest. Bronze directional markers set on the outer handrail, contain information about the distances to significant trading positions around the world.
